Queen of the Night
“Every Evening the Goddess NUT Swallows the God RA who is reborn at Dawn”
The Queen of the Night reimagines Mozart’s iconic character through the mythology and symbolism of Ancient Egypt.
Inspired by the goddess Nut and Pharaoh Hatshepsut, the costume explores themes of power, femininity, erasure, and rebirth.
The star-covered cape references the celestial ceilings of the Valley of the Kings and Nut’s role as the goddess who swallows the sun god Ra each evening before his rebirth at dawn, enveloping the body in darkness, transformation, and light.
Developed through experimental textile processes including silkscreen printing, hand dyeing, gold foil application, and Fortuny pleating, the piece merges historical opulence with contemporary performance costume.
Designed for the outer Cape, an embodiment of a Sarcophagus from the Golden Age of Ancient Egypt. With reference to the wings of the Goddess Isis & Nekhbet.
